The colony of New York was established by the Dutch for trade and monetary gain.

It was originally known as New Amsterdam. In 1664, Peter Stuyvesant, the Dutch leader, surrendered to the English. The colony was then renamed New York, after the Duke of York. The Dutch Colonies - History of the Dutch colonies in America
