replace f(x) with y
switch x and y
solve for y
replace y with f⁻¹(x)

f(x)=x-1
y=x-1
x=y-1
x+1=y
x+1=f⁻¹(x)
f⁻¹(x)=x+1

1. substitute y for f(x) y=8x
2. switch x and y x=8y
3. solve for y y=x/8
4. plug f(x)^-1 back in for y f(x)^(-1)=x/8
