Collage comes from the French coller, which means: to glue.

It is used, primarily, to refer to an art technique in the visual arts characterized by being an assemblage of different forms, colors, images, and even objects that, as the word implies, give the appearance of being glued and pieced together onto the canvas. Though it is an ancient technique, it became very popular during the 20th century with the Modernist art movement.
