This is incorrect. Fui should be used because it is in the preterit tense.
Spanish has two past tenses, preterit and imperfect (iba is the imperfect form of ir). Imperfect should be used for repetitive events or events that span over a longer period of time. Preterit should be used for actions and one time events.
